Eccella Smiles

Sleep Apnea & Snoring in Jacksonville Beach, FL

Snoring is more than a nightly inconvenience — it is often a signal that your airway is being partially or fully obstructed during sleep. When those obstructions become severe enough to repeatedly stop breathing during the night, the condition is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). At Eccella Smiles in Jacksonville Beach, our dental team offers oral appliance therapy as a comfortable, non-invasive treatment option for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea and chronic snoring. For patients who have already been diagnosed — or who suspect they may have sleep apnea — we can work alongside your physician to provide custom-fitted dental solutions that help keep your airway open while you sleep. Explore how our sleep apnea treatment connects to our broader wellness services, or contact our Jacksonville Beach office to schedule a consultation.

Understanding Sleep Apnea and Its Health Risks

An apnea is a pause in breathing that lasts longer than 10 seconds. Patients with sleep apnea can experience these pauses hundreds of times per night without being aware of it. Snoring, daytime drowsiness, morning headaches, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems are all common signs that your body may not be receiving adequate oxygen during sleep. Every organ system depends on oxygen — the brain, the heart, the muscles — and chronic deprivation takes a real toll.

Beyond fatigue and cognitive effects, the health consequences of untreated sleep apnea can be serious. Research published by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has linked obstructive sleep apnea to significantly elevated cardiovascular risk, including hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine similarly recognizes OSA as a major risk factor for high blood pressure and cardiac events. This is why early evaluation and treatment matter — not just for sleep quality, but for long-term health.

Sleep apnea also has a meaningful overlap with dental health. Patients who grind their teeth at night, experience jaw tension, or have been told they have TMJ-related headaches are sometimes also dealing with sleep-disordered breathing. Our team evaluates for these connections during your consultation, which is one of the meaningful advantages of receiving this care in a dental setting.

Oral Appliance Therapy: A Comfortable CPAP Alternative

In most cases, snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea can be addressed with conservative, non-surgical treatment. Our team can create a thin, flexible oral appliance worn at night that gently repositions the jaw forward, keeping the airway open and reducing the interruptions that cause apnea episodes and snoring. This custom-fitted device has proven effective for the majority of patients who snore or have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.

Oral appliance therapy is also an excellent alternative for patients who have tried CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy and found it uncomfortable, disruptive, or difficult to use consistently. Unlike a CPAP machine, an oral appliance is small, silent, portable, and requires no mask or tubing — making it far easier to use every night. For patients with nighttime teeth grinding or jaw tension, oral appliance therapy may also overlap with a custom mouthguard — two concerns that our team can address together in a single treatment plan.

If you have not yet been formally diagnosed, our team may refer you for a sleep study to confirm whether obstructive sleep apnea is present and to determine its severity. This step ensures that your treatment is clinically appropriate and that your appliance is calibrated for your specific needs. Dr. Shelby Sox, DMD, and our team are ready to guide you through every step of the process. Contact our Jacksonville Beach office to schedule your consultation, and ask about CareCredit financing options to help manage the cost of treatment.

Amazing experience with Dr. Sox and Erin! I had a traumatic experience with a previous dentist that left me pretty shaken up for any type of dental procedure. Dr. Sox and Erin were patient and understanding and helped me throughout the whole process. Can't wait to see Dr. Wagner next week for my TMJ work-up.

As a retired dentist who recently moved to Jacksonville, I knew what I was looking for in a new dental practice for my family. I am very glad I found Eccella and want to share my experience. First, the facility is modern and clean. Second, the equipment is the latest and best for patient care. Lastly, the doctors and entire staff make you feel like family. The care I received was top-notch, appropriate and delivered gently. I normally don’t post reviews but this practice earned it!
